Do you lose control of Emperor's Dias before the staged showdown opens?

There is a period where the chain is empty, you have no units at the battlefield you control, and a showdown is staged but not yet open — cleanup makes you lose control a few steps before the showdown opens. You can then play your own Rengar in the ensuing non-combat showdown to become surprise defender.
