Can any discarded card ready runes through Hwei's When I move effect?

In a Hartford Regional replay, a Diana player discarded Sprite Fountain to ready 2 runes. Can any card type (unit, spell, or gear) be discarded this way, and do you ready runes equal to the discarded card's cost?

That play came from Hwei's When I move ability: draw 1, then discard 1, then based on the discarded card's type — Spell: draw 1; Gear: ready up to 2 runes; Unit: give Hwei +3 Might this turn. Discarding a gear readies 2 runes.
