Does removing the defender prevent excess damage scoring?

You swing with Sivir, Mercenary for 7 damage, then kill the defending unit before damage is dealt. A player asked whether excess damage still counts.

If the defender is removed before the damage step, does excess damage still apply?

No. If the Showdown Step ends without units from both players, you skip the Damage Step. Assigning damage only happens in the Damage Step, so there must still be an enemy defender when damage is assigned.
